Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are rapidly modernising the chemical industry through smarter data-driven decision-making, advanced process automation, and intelligent optimization systems, according to Prof. Mahadeva Prasanna, Director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Dharwad.

He was speaking at the inauguration of a three-day workshop on ‘Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Chemical Engineers’, organised by the Department of Chemical Engineering at Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Engineering and Technology (SDMCET) in Dharwad. The workshop was held in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE), BRC Bengaluru.

Experts Highlight Emerging Opportunities

Prof. Mahadeva Prasanna offered an in-depth overview of how AI and ML are revolutionising the engineering landscape. He stressed the growing importance of these technologies in enhancing operational efficiency, driving innovation, and creating new possibilities for the chemical sector.

Interdisciplinary Learning Key to the Future

Dr. Ramesh L. Chakrasali, Principal of SDMCET, underlined the need for interdisciplinary learning. He pointed out that AI and ML are enhancing chemical engineering practices. They are also redefining the training of future chemical engineers.

Embracing Innovation for Industry Relevance

As reported by thehindu.com, secretary of SDME Society, encouraged students and faculty members to actively adopt new technologies. He emphasised that embracing innovation is critical for remaining competitive and relevant in the rapidly evolving chemical industry landscape.

Japan to increase reliance on nuclear energy

  Japan’s Cabinet has approved a new basic energy plan emphasising nuclear power and renewables as its primary carbon-free sources to ensure energy security and achieve net-zero emissions. The government revises its energy plan about every three years. The plan is based on the Basic Energy Policy Law enacted in June 2002. The new 7th Basic Energy Plan reverses the government’s earlier resolve to minimise reliance on nuclear energy following the 2011 Fukushima crisis. Nuclear power will account for about 20% of the Japan’s total energy output in fiscal 2040, similar to the fiscal 2030 target of 20-22% and a significant increase on the 8.5% in fiscal 2023. Electricity demand is expected to rise due in part to the prevalence of artificial intelligence and data centres.
